She Shoots, She Soars – Announcing Calgary’s First Professional Women’s Soccer Team

Sometimes, a client steps up to the spot, ready to make history and we at Worthington PR have the honour of supporting them towards their goal.

Soccer fever is spreading across Canada, and in Calgary more kids are lacing up their cleats to play soccer than ever before. In fact, there are now more soccer players than hockey players in Calgary! The surge in the sport’s popularity has been driven by Canada’s stellar Women’s National Team, who won Olympic gold four years ago, and the Men’s National Team’s recent World Cup appearance.

This burgeoning interest has already given rise to the Canadian Premier League, providing professional men’s soccer across Canada. Yet, until now, a professional women’s league has been conspicuously absent. Enter the Northern Super League (NSL), set to kick off in 2025 with six founding teams from across the country for its inaugural season.

Worthington PR was thrilled to get the ball rolling for Calgary Wild FC, the first NSL team to announce its name and brand just two days after the league’s own debut. Calgary Wild FC is not only Calgary’s first women’s professional soccer team but also the only professional Canadian women’s sports team, of any sport, between Vancouver and Toronto.

Given the significance of announcing the first team of the first ever Canadian women’s professional league, it would have been an own goal not to invite Calgary’s vibrant soccer community to watch it take place.

In front of a packed room of more than 100 soccer-mad Calgarians and members of the media, Calgary Wild FC unveiled its brand, logo, and playing location at McMahon Stadium.

Our team helped Calgary Wild FC hit the top corner with their announcement. We provided spokesperson media training, developed key messaging and FAQs, and crafted media advisories and a news release, pitching the story to journalists. The news release also hit the national newswire to extend its reach.

The announcement generated national media attention, resulting in nearly 300 stories with a reach of almost 170 million—a testament to the interest and demand for women’s soccer in Calgary and across the country.

On the event side, we orchestrated the announcement news conference, ensuring outdoor opportunities for scrums and interviews, as well as b-roll of some of Calgary’s best women’s players showing off their skills on the pitch.

For our team members who led the work on the announcement, it was especially rewarding as both are soccer parents of girls who now have a pathway to professional soccer right here at home.

The impact of the team and the league will not just be more soccer to watch, but a game-changer that will redefine the landscape of women’s soccer in Calgary and across Canada.

We can’t wait to cheer on Calgary Wild FC as they take to the pitch in Spring 2025!
