Mike Brown – PR Manager
Meet Mike! As the newest member of our team, he brings in-depth knowledge of media relations, communications management and issues management to Worthington. With more than a decade of experience in strategic communications inside both government and Calgary’s non-profit sector, he loves helping clients feel comfortable speaking to the media and supporting them to tell their stories to the public.
WPRS: How did you get your start in marketing / communications?
Mike: A Calgary non-profit hired me to help launch their first-ever government relations program to advocate for people living on low incomes. I quickly learned that we needed to engage the media and have a public relations strategy if we wanted success in our advocacy. Without someone else on staff to do this, I taught myself how to write a news release, create key messages and pitch journalists. The first news release I wrote led to a front page story in the Calgary Herald. From there, I was hooked and have been working in communications ever since.
WPRS: Favourite social media platform?
Mike: I use Twitter/X the most…but I’m always on the look out for what’s next.
WPRS: What’s your favourite marketing quote?
Mike: “Public Relations is making flower arrangements of the facts, placing them so the wilted and less attractive petals are hidden by sturdy blooms.” – Alan Harrington
WPRS: What’s your best story?
Mike: Growing up I had the opportunity to do part of seventh grade in Australia. It’s an experience I will never forget and a country I’ve been fortunate to travel to since and with my family. I’ll never forget seeing kangaroos in my schoolyard.
WPRS: What’s your passion outside of work?
Mike: Soccer! I’ve been playing since I was five. Today, you’ll find me cheering on Cavalry FC, volunteering with my daughter’s club, Chinooks FC, and (still) playing as well.
