Onyie Ekene-Obi – Practicum Student
We are constantly growing and willing to welcome students who want to grow and build great career experiences. We welcome Onyie Ekene-Obi, a SAIT practicum student who is an avid storyteller, photographer and passionate PR practitioner.
WPRS: How did you get your start in marketing / communications?
Onyie: I studied Mass Communication in Nigeria and worked in its public sector for over seven years as a public relations and communications professional. My quest to grow and explore new options led me to take the journalism program at SAIT. I am still excited about how I am able to tell more client stories every day and have the opportunity to help brands build a strong and positive image.
WPRS: Favourite social media platform?
Onyie: Instagram! It is so visual and allows for creativity and great storytelling through photos and multimedia. It is also easy to use and very interactive.
WPRS: What’s your favourite marketing quote?
Onyie: My favourite quote is “Nothing sticks in your head better than a story. Stories can express the most complicated ideas in the most digestible way.” – Sam Balter. It totally encapsulates my idea of what marketing and communications mean to me – STORYTELLING.
WPRS: What’s your best story?
Onyie: I moved to Canada wondering what would become of me after investing over seven years of my career back home. When I was searching for a PR company to have my practicum at, the story of the “yellow arrow” resonated with me. Here I am at Worthington PR and Story making my dreams come true. I can’t wait to see what the future has in store.
WPRS: What’s your passion outside of work?
Onyie: I love spending time with my two young kids exploring places, food and different parks together. They are so active so they keep me very busy and on my toes.
